Buttocks (Full Cheeks) Aftercare: First 72 Hours & What to Avoid

Pittsford Village (Main Street historic business district), serving Rochester, Fairport, East Rochester, Brighton, Henrietta, and Perinton
I hear this a lot, especially from first-timers who were nervous walking in but felt their anxiety ease once we got started. The number one rule right after a Buttocks (Full Cheeks) wax is simple: keep the area clean, cool, and dry. For the first 24 to 72 hours, your skin is extra reactive, so what you wear and what you do matters. If you’re in Rochester and heading back out into the day after your appointment, a little planning goes a long way.
0 to 24 hours after Buttocks (Full Cheeks): keep it calm, not sweaty
Right after waxing, a little redness, warmth, and “tiny bump” texture is common. Your goal for the first day is to avoid adding heat, friction, and bacteria to freshly waxed skin.
Quick checklist for today: lukewarm rinse or gentle cleanse, pat dry, loose clothing, and no activities that make you sweat heavily.
Do this on day one
- Cleanse gently with lukewarm water. If you use a cleanser, keep it mild and fragrance-free.
- Pat dry, don’t rub. Rubbing is a fast way to trigger irritation.
- Use a cool compress for 5 to 10 minutes if you feel heat or tenderness.
- Wear breathable underwear, ideally loose cotton, and skip anything tight that presses into the waxed area.
Avoid this on day one
- Hot showers, hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms
- Swimming pools, lakes, and hot tubs
- Sex and anything that adds friction to the area
- Gym sessions, spin, running, or long walks that make you sweat and rub
24 to 72 hours: how to commute, change clothes, and avoid irritation
This is the window where people accidentally mess up an otherwise great wax. I’ve had plenty of clients come in nervous for intimate waxing, then leave surprised at how comfortable and low-awkward it felt. The aftercare is the same vibe. Simple, calm, and consistent.
If you’re heading back to work in Rochester
Plan for less friction and less sweat. If you booked around a busy commute, bring a loose change of clothes. It’s especially helpful if you’re walking around Pittsford Village after your appointment or taking a stroll along the Erie Canal. Freshly waxed skin doesn’t love tight seams.
- Choose breathable fabric and avoid shapewear, tight leggings, and rough denim for a couple days.
- Keep workouts light. If you must move, keep it low-sweat and short. The less rubbing, the better.
- Hands off. Don’t pick at bumps or touch the area throughout the day.
Rochester weather note: in cooler, drier months, skin tends to feel itchier after waxing. That’s usually dryness, not “something wrong.” Keep moisturizer simple and fragrance-free.
Days 3 to 7: preventing ingrown hairs on the buttocks (without overdoing it)
By day three, most skin has settled down. This is when you start focusing on ingrown prevention, because hair is beginning to regrow under the surface.
When to start exfoliating
I generally recommend waiting 3 to 7 days before exfoliating. Start gently. A soft washcloth in the shower is a good first step. If you prefer a chemical exfoliant, choose one made for body use and keep it mild. If you see open skin, persistent redness, or tenderness, pause exfoliation and let things calm down.
What makes bumps hang around longer
- Heavy oils and thick occlusive products that trap sweat
- Scrubs that are too rough or used too soon
- Tight clothing that rubs consistently
- Shaving in between waxes, which can increase irritation and uneven regrowth
A lot of my waxing clients tell me they were anxious beforehand and then surprised by how gentle and thorough the appointment felt. Keep that same energy at home. Don’t attack the skin to “fix” it. Steady care gets you the smooth, clean finish you booked for.
The simple product lineup I like for buttocks waxing aftercare
You don’t need a long routine. You need the right types of products at the right time.
First 48 to 72 hours: cool compresses as needed, fragrance-free aloe or witch hazel for calming, and a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer. Skip retinoids and strong acids on the area during this window.
After day 3: add gentle exfoliation 2 to 3 times a week and keep moisturizing. If you’re dealing with dryness in Rochester’s winter air, moisturizing consistently matters more than using “stronger” products.
And please don’t use fragranced body butters or heavy oils right away. They feel nice in the moment, but they tend to trap heat and sweat, which is exactly what freshly waxed skin doesn’t want.
When to text me after a wax (and what’s normal)
A little redness, mild swelling around follicles, and sensitivity for a day or two is normal. Small bumps often fade within 24 to 72 hours, especially when you keep the area clean, dry, and in breathable clothing.

If something feels truly off, I want to hear about it. Reach out if you have severe pain, redness that’s spreading, fever, or anything that looks like infection. I’d rather you check in early than sit there worrying.
